Kimberly van Iersel6 Mar 1988-6 Mar 1994
Kimberly was the youngest grandchild, came a few years after me. Every sunday
the family would get together at my grandmothers, and Kim and I "claimed"
gran's bedroom, with the big bouncy bed. Kim'd go to the head of the bed,
run to me, standing at the end of it, and 'd jump into my arms. I'd then
whirl her around the room, and throw her back on the bed. She'd bounce for
a bit, then crawl back up and run to me again, jumping up into my arms. I
must've done that whirl a zillion times on those sundays, she'd do it till
my arms felt like falling off.. On her 6th birthday, Kim got a pj, toys,
a new bicycle with wheels on the side... The kid's party was going on, all
her friends from school were there, eating candy and cake, having a great
time. Playing in the backyard and out on the pavement, Kim riding around
on her bike. She fell off but she didn't start crying. When she stayed down,
one of her friends went inside to my aunt, Kim's mom, to say she wasn't getting
back on. My aunt thought she was just trying to get attention, but after
a few more minutes another child came in saying Kim still hadn't gotten up.
Now Jeannie (my aunt) got worried, and went outside. Kim wasn't breathing
anymore, and eventhough Jeannie had taken a first aid course, the CPR didn't
seem to be working. Kim died that day, surrounded by her friends and family.
What happened puzzled the doctor who did the autopsy. Apparently she'd fainted
and thrown up at the same time, suffocating on her stomach's contents. Something
that is -sadly- rather common for substance abusers, but he'd never seen
it happening to a child who, other than false croup every now and then, was
perfectly healthy. Kim's been gone for a few years now. Soon after she passed
away my aunt became pregnant again, which was close to a miracle: it had
been hard getting pregnant the first time, it took them years. Danielle was
born, now the spitting image of her sister. Later on another sister came
into the world, Manon, who's just learning how to walk. One of the first
things they were taught was that they have an angel-sister who watches over
them... Kim hasn't been forgotten by her family, none of us could forget
her. Kim was particularly vibrant and full of life. She loved horses and
her dog Speedy, the birds in their garden too. For a girl that small, she
emanated love and life. Kim, we won't ever forget you. Your "gekke José"
